Therapy Dog FAQs

What is a Therapy dog?
A therapy dog is a trained, well-mannered dog that visits places such as hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and community centers to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support to others. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs do not perform disability-related tasks for one specific handler. Instead, they share their calm presence and friendly nature with many people, helping promote connection, comfort, and well-being.
What is the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog?
A service dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability, helping them manage daily life and gain greater independence. A therapy dog visits places like hospitals, schools, and nursing homes to provide comfort and companionship to many people. Service dogs work for one handler, while therapy dogs serve the community. The two roles have different training goals, access rights, and responsibilities.
What is the Snuggle Squad program?
The High Desert Snuggle Squad is a community outreach program through Lighthouse Canine Learning Center that brings the comfort, joy, and companionship of therapy dogs to people who need a little extra love. Through therapy dog visits to schools, senior centers, and community programs, our dogs help brighten days, encourage connection, and create meaningful moments through the simple power of the human-animal bond. Our mission is to make the comfort of a furry friend accessible to more people throughout our community.
Can Lighthouse bring dogs to schools, senior centers, or community programs?
Yes! Lighthouse Canine Learning Center offers therapy dog visits and community outreach opportunities for schools, senior centers, and other organizations. Through our High Desert Snuggle Squad, we bring the comfort and companionship of our dogs to people of all ages. Whether supporting educational activities, brightening a senior's day, or providing comfort during stressful times, we tailor our visits to each organization's needs. Contact us to discuss scheduling, availability, and program options.
How can an organization request a visit?
Organizations interested in hosting a therapy dog visit can contact Lighthouse Canine Learning Center through our website at LighthouseK9s.com or by email at LighthouseK9s@gmail.com. Please include your organization's name, location, the type of visit you're interested in, and your preferred dates. We'll work with you to discuss your needs, availability, and program options to create a meaningful experience for your participants.
Are your dogs evaluated before visiting the public?
Yes! At Lighthouse Canine Learning Center, we believe every dog must be suited to the work they perform. Dogs are evaluated for temperament, behavior, obedience, and their ability to remain calm and comfortable around different people and environments. Our priority is the safety and well-being of both the dogs and the people they serve. We carefully consider each dog's readiness before including them in therapy visits or community outreach programs.
What is the cost for a Therapy dog visit?
Our therapy dog visit pricing depends on the type of program, length of the visit, and number of dogs requested. We offer customized options for schools, senior centers, businesses, and community organizations. We understand that every organization has a different budget, and we encourage you to contact us to discuss your needs and find the best option for your program.
