Frequently Asked questions

How much does a service dog cost?
The cost of a service dog depends on the dog's training, the specific tasks required, and the individual needs of the handler. Fully trained service dogs can start around $35,000 and specialized placements potentially costing $43,000 or more.Every placement is unique and training is suited to the handlers daily life.
Are financial assistance or sponsorships available?
Lighthouse Canine Learning Center is commited to making service dogs available to everyone. Financial Assistance and Scholarship Opportunities may be available depending on current funding, domations, grants, and individual circumstances. We encourage potential handlers or their families to contact us to discuss their needs. We cannot guarantee funding for every applicant, but we welcome conversations about possible options and ways our supporters may help make a placement possible.
Do you accept owner-trained dogs or work with outside trainers?
Every dog-handler team is different and we are happy to discuss owner-trained dogd and dogs who have worked with outside trainers on a case-by-case basis. Acceptance into the training program mainly dpends on the dogs temperament, health, and ability to meet public-access standards.
What is your process if a placement is not the right fit?
The well being of the dog and handler are our priority. Although we will work carefully to match a dog with an appropriate handler, a placement may not meet everones needs as expected. If concerns arise, contact us so we can discuss the situation, identify the challenges, and determine the next steps from there.Every situation is evaluated individually. Our goal is to find a responsible solution that protects the dog's welfare and supports the handlers needs.
What happens after a dog goes home with their handler?
Placement is the beginning, not the end! Every team will work and grow together at different rates, so the training plan looks different for everyone. Some teams will require monthly lifetime support, some experienced handlers will only need a few months of work, occasional check ins, and annual reassesment. Regardless of their support needs, we strive to create community and lifetime friendships with our handlers.
Why do service dogs cost so much?
Preparing a service dog begins long before training. It includes carefully planned breedings, health and genetic testing, approximately 24 months of food, veterinary care, toys, treats, beds, leashes, equipment, and daily love and attention. Add hundreds of hours of specialized training, public-access preparation, and task development, and you begin to understand the investment behind each dog. You’re not just paying for a dog... you’re investing in a carefully raised, trained partner prepared to help change a life.
