Puppies & Puppy Raising FAQs
Do you breed and raise your own service dog prospects?
Yes! Lighthouse Canine Learning Center breeds and raises our own Bobtail Bernard service dog prospects. We carefully select our breeding dogs for desirable physical traits, stable temperaments, and the qualities we believe can help produce successful service dog candidates. Genetics can influence a puppy’s physical characteristics, temperament, and behavioral tendencies, while training and experience shape their development. We are intentional about developing a specific personality type suited to service work, prioritizing dogs that are confident, people-oriented, adaptable, and eager to learn. Every puppy is evaluated individually as they grow, because even the most carefully planned breeding cannot guarantee that every dog will be suited for service work.
How are your puppies socialized?
At Lighthouse Canine Learning Center, socialization begins early and continues throughout each puppy’s development. Our puppies are gently introduced to different people, sounds, surfaces, environments, handling, and everyday experiences in a positive, age-appropriate way. As they mature, we gradually introduce new challenges to help build confidence, resilience, and adaptability. We focus on creating well-rounded dogs that can remain comfortable and engaged in a variety of environments, while recognizing that every puppy develops at their own pace.
Can I adopt a puppy that is not suited for service work?
Absolutely! Not every puppy is suited for service work, but that doesn't mean they won't make a wonderful companion. Puppies who aren't selected for our service dog program may be available for adoption to loving homes that are a better fit for their individual personalities and needs. Our priority is finding the right home for every dog, where they can thrive and be loved for who they are.
Can I volunteer to help raise a puppy?
Absolutely! Lighthouse Canine Learning Center welcomes people interested in helping raise and socialize future service dog prospects. Puppy raising is an important part of preparing dogs for their future roles and may include basic manners, confidence-building, socialization, and foundational training. Volunteers help give our puppies the positive experiences they need to grow into well-rounded dogs. Contact us to learn about current volunteer opportunities and how you can become part of a puppy's journey.
How do you evaluate puppies for temperament and working potential?
At Lighthouse Canine Learning Center, we observe each puppy’s personality, confidence, curiosity, sociability, adaptability, and willingness to engage with people and learn. We look for qualities that may make a successful service dog, including emotional stability, resilience, and the ability to recover from unfamiliar experiences. Evaluations continue as puppies mature, because temperament and working potential develop over time. While genetics and early experiences help guide our selection, every dog is evaluated individually to determine the best path for their future.
Are your dogs guaranteed to become service dogs?
No. While we carefully select our breeding dogs and evaluate each puppy for service work potential, no dog can be guaranteed to become a service dog. Temperament, health, maturity, and individual development all play a role in determining suitability. Our priority is finding the right path for every dog, whether that means service work, therapy work, or life as a beloved companion. We believe every dog deserves the opportunity to succeed in the role best suited to them.
